We are still in January –  you don’t need to be smashing all your pole goals for the year just yet

I like January. Fucking cancel me for all I care, but as a winter girlie I have to say this dark, grey behemoth of a month is criminally under rated. Instead of pining for the festivities of December, or longing for the 36 hour long days of summer, I encourage every pole dancer (or person reading this) to make the most of January and embrace it’s cosiness as a soft buffer into the year ahead. And take February (or as long as you bloody well like really) as a buffer too while you’re at it.

I’m going to be brutally honest with you all and admit that I went a bit hard for the 2024 festive period. Much food was consumed (I regret absolutely nothing) and equally just as much beer, rum, Prosecco, whiskey and god knows what else was booze wise was also consumed (I regret quite a bit of that).  New Years day was spent as a shell of my former self after being violently sick in the kitchen sink at 2am, followed by falling in and out of naps, attempting to watch World’s Strongest Man and trying to nibble away at a sausage sarnie to feel somewhat human again. I cannot drink like I used to as it took me pretty much a full week to feel like a somewhat energised human again, but I digress.

On 2nd January, whilst not feeling quite as rancid as I did on New Years day, I was still operating on about 40% capacity at best and was more akin to a dropped kebab that has been left out in the rain than a woman in her 30s. The acid reflux was very much real, as was the tiredness, hangxiety and leftover sluggishness from December. Despite this, I still went to pole class with my buddy Clare, as human interaction and cheering myself up was very much needed, and it worked a fucking treat.

I’ve been to five pole classes so far in 2025 and whilst I haven’t been able to achieve anything of note in terms of moves and tricks, they have been exactly what I needed to start the year on a joyful front. Unsurprisingly the boozing and lack of regular routine over the festive period meant my mental health wasn’t on top form (which is 10/10 okay), and simply getting out of the house and moving my body in some capacity has held me and helped me to feel slightly better. I attended pole practice two Sundays ago and whilst I couldn’t achieve what I set out to (damn you elbow grip Ayesha you shall return one day!) doing a little bit of movement and chatting to my pole pals was a trip well spent.

Furthermore, we are technically only at the start of the Gregorian calendar year, and I for one am saving the whole fresh and lively new year vibes until at least March, when Spring kicks the doors in. As well reminded by OG Pole legend Jamie Taylor, we are still very much in the depths of winter, a time when nature is resting and retreating and our ancestors would have been having some cracking naps. Therefore, stepping out and achieving great big feats and smashing your pole goals categorically does not need to be done yet. If you feel motivated to jump straight into 2025 and melt it’s face off, then by all means crack on, but you’re perfectly entitled to still be in your hibernation phase.  Personally, I am using what’s left of January (and my beloved winter) to strike a balance between resting my little socks off and making a plan for what shit I want to get done in 2025, both in the pole realm and beyond.

TL;DR, if you’re already well into the swing of 2025 and are waking up and kicking it in the nuts every morning then by all means crack on, but if like me your energy levels are not quite at beast mode yet then nestle in, remain cosy for a bit longer and if you’re really up to it make your plans for 2025. Or just order a banging takeaway and bingewatch your favourite series.
