The Dragontail is my latest obsession

Do you ever encounter a pole move that just clicks? Like you give it a good solid go and it just clicks. There’s no agonising over it for months, no dreading it coming up in class for fear of having to face your nemesis, fail and end up feeling like a defeated mess. You just attempt it the once and right from the get go you’re comfortable in it? Well that is exactly what happened to me with my new found favourite move, the beloved Dragontail.

It’s no secret that I am a proud pole tortoise who takes longer than your average dancer to achieve a move. What most of my classmates can achieve in one lesson usually takes me an extra few weeks of classes before I get there, and that is perfectly okay and I’m cool with it. Baring this in mind however, can you imagine my sheer surprise when the Dragontail just clicked straight away? There was no fannying about in fear, no repeated, failed attempts at getting into position, it all just clicked marvelously upon first attempt. So much so that I have decided to dedicate an entire blog to it.

First off, the main reason I am firmly licking the anus of said Dragontail is that it falls into my favourite category of pole moves – those that look badass but are not sketchy at all. Fellow moves in this category include my beloved Cross Knee Release, Butterfly variations and certain Genie variations. In my humble opinion, a Dragontail is no more complicated than a flatline, if anything it’s easier as you have one hand behind your back for added grip. Seriously the amount of grip one has in a Dragontail is a significant contributing factor to why I love it so much. You’ve got both hands on, inside leg grip if you’re doing the Scorpio variation and inner thigh grip if you’re attempting the straddle one. You’re nicely wedged in and can easily put a leg on to get out of it again, an absolute win all round.

However, despite having multiple grip points in it, the Dragontail is not a painful move in the slightest. There’s no agonising grip points which hold all your weight at once (I’m looking at you elbow grip you utter cunt) you’re just nicely held in position throughout with the relatively pain free grips of hand and inside leg. I am fully aware that the inside leg grip can be a bit of a pinchy bastard at first, however it’s one that you can easily condition quickly after a short while in my opinion.

Another thing I fucking love about the Dragontail are the multiple variations of it that you can do. You can do a nice sturdy inside leg hang version with your other leg chilling out nicely around the back of the pole, get your spready on and bust out a straddle version or, if you’re a bendy bean, style it out in the splits. Personally, I do not yet have the balance nor flexibility to execute a splitty Dragontail (it’s firmly on the practice list) but managed to do a nice, straddley Dragontail whilst on spinny pole in my beastly 9 inch boots. That’ll fucking do pig.

Last but by no means least, a Dragontail is an awesome move by default purely because it has such a badass name. You can keep your perfectly average named moves like your Dove and Cocoon (totally not jealous that those are moves I can’t do) and I’ll stick to my fiery new favourite the Dragontail!
